What is a Hydraulic Pulverizer?
A hydraulic pulverizer, often simply called a "concrete pulverizer" or "processor," is a powerful, heavy-duty attachment used in demolition, construction, and scrap recycling. It is mounted on excavators, backhoes, or other heavy machinery and is powered by the machine's hydraulic system.
Its primary function is to break, crush, demolish, and separate materials like concrete, rock, and structural elements. A key feature of many pulverizers is their ability to separate concrete from rebar, allowing for efficient material sorting and recycling.

The operation is straightforward but powerful:
Mounting & Power: The pulverizer is attached to the host machine's arm via a mounting kit (like a pin-and-bushing system). Hydraulic hoses connect the pulverizer to the machine's hydraulic circuit.
Hydraulic Actuation: The operator uses controls in the cab to send hydraulic fluid to the pulverizer's cylinders.
Jaw Movement: This hydraulic pressure extends large cylinders, which force the movable jaw (or "arm") to close against the fixed jaw.
Crushing Force: The immense force generated-often measured in tons-is concentrated onto the material caught between the jaws. The jaws are typically equipped with replaceable, pyramid-shaped tips (teeth) that bite into the concrete, focusing the pressure and breaking it apart.
Separation: As the concrete is crushed, the embedded steel rebar is exposed and bent. The operator can then shake the pulverizer or open the jaws to drop the clean crushed concrete and retain the tangled rebar for separate disposal or recycling.
Body/Frame: The main, robust structure that houses the cylinder and connects to the carrier.
Hydraulic Cylinder(s): The heart of the pulverizer. It converts hydraulic pressure from the machine into the massive linear force needed to crush.
Jaws:
Fixed Jaw: Part of the main body.
Movable Jaw: Activated by the cylinder.
Tips/Teeth: Replaceable, high-strength steel points attached to the jaws. They are made from hardened AR400 or AR500 steel to withstand extreme abrasion and impact.
Pins & Bushings: These form the hinge points for the movable jaw and the connection to the excavator. They require regular greasing.
Mounting Bracket: The interface that allows the pulverizer to be attached to a specific size and model of excavator.
Concrete Demolition: Breaking down buildings, bridges, sidewalks, and foundations.
Material Separation: The #1 use is separating concrete from rebar, which is crucial for recycling.
Size Reduction: Crushing large chunks of concrete into smaller, manageable aggregate for use as backfill or base material for new construction.
Scrap Processing: Crushing and compacting car bodies, appliances, and other metal scrap in recycling yards.
Secondary Breaking: Breaking oversized boulders at quarries or large rocks on construction sites after blasting.
Efficiency: Dramatically speeds up demolition and processing compared to manual labor or just a hydraulic breaker.
Recycling: Enables efficient sorting of materials, turning waste into valuable recycled aggregate and scrap metal.
Versatility: A single excavator with multiple attachments (pulverizer, shear, grapple) becomes a multi-tool for the job site.
Cost-Effective: Reduces disposal costs by separating materials and eliminates the need for specialized single-purpose machines.
Precision: Allows for controlled demolition in tight spaces, especially rotational models.
